Chocobo Breeding Guide

    This guide was based in some of the story from the Chocobo Sage and my own experience while breeding chocobos. This guide is written with the purpose of helping you and guide you through the process of the chocobo breeding. If you don't get the results you expected its not my fault. You can do whatever you want with this document.

1. Basic information about chocobos

    You can start breeding chocobos after you get the highwind in disk 2. The first Thing you have to know is that there are several classes of chocobos.

• Yellow: this chocobos can normally been caught in some areas of the world map. There are several types of yellow chocobos. There are wonderful, great, good, average, poor and weak. This chocobos can't go over mountains nor rivers and the ocean.

• Green: This class of chocobo can't be caught anymore, so you have to breed it. This chocobo can go over mountains, but not over cliffs and can't cross rivers and oceans.

• Blue: This chocobo can cross rivers but not the ocean and can't go over mountains nor cliffs.

• Black: The black chocobo can do what the green and blue do, but can't walk over the ocean.

• Gold: This chocobo is the best of all. You can go go where ever you want.

    There are several areas in the map where you can catch chocobos. This areas are marked by chocobo tracks. Before hunting chocobos you have to equip the "Chocobo Lure" materia. You can purchase it from the Chocobo Billy at the beginning of the game for the price of 3,000 Gil.

• Chcobo ranch area.- This area is the worst of all, you can only get average, poor and weak chocobos from this areas

• Mideel area.- This is a good area to catch chocobos, here you can get great and average chocobos.

• Gold Saucer area.- You can get good and average chocobos.,

• Rocket Town area.- You can get great and poor chocobos.

• Icicle area.- Here you get wonderful and poor chocobos.

    The greens are the food for the chocobo. You can use them to raise your chocobo abilities, or during battle you can use them to entertain the chocobo, while you fight with the monsters.

    I rather use the sylkis greens, they are expensive, but are the best.
 

4. Nuts

    For breeding chocobos you are going to need only two types of nuts. One is the carob nut. You can steal the carob nut from an enemy found in the Icicle area called "Vrakoradus", or you can buy it in Gold Saucer's Wonder Square for the price of "500 GP".

    The other is the Zeio nut. You can get this nut by stealing it from "goblins", found in the Goblin Island.

5. Taking care of chocobos

    Once you have chocobos inside of the wooden fence of the ranch, you can do several things. You can go and talk to the Chcobos Billy's grandfather, that is inside of the house. He will sell you a stable for 10,000 Gil. You have to buy at least 3.

    Also you can go and talk to the Chocobo Billy. When you talk to him you have several options. Here is a list of them:

• Buy: You can buy greens and nuts from him

• Get some information: He gives you basic information about chocobos, and talks about the Chocobo Sage.

• Moving Chocobos: With this option you can move the chocobos you have in the wooden fence, to the stables you purchase. Or you can realse the chocobos you have in the wooden fence. When you are moving a chocobo, the Chocobo Billy will make some comments about the chocobo.

• Feeding Chocobos: You can feed your chocobos by giving them greens.

• Mating Chocobos: You can mate your chocobos. In order to be able to use this option you have to have one male and one female chocobo inside the stables, and an empty one for the newborn.

• Releasing Chocobos: You can release the chocobos you have inside the stables.

• Riding Chocobos: You can ride any of the chocobos you have inside the stables.

6. Racing Chocobos.

    This is a very important step in the chocobo breeding process, because of this depends the king of chocobo you are going to get after mating. There are several ranks, in which chocobos are located. The lowest of them is the "C" rank. Then comes the " B" rank, then the " A" rank and the last one is the "S" rank.

    The only thing you have to do is go to Gold Saucer and talk to Ester, she is going to ask you if you want to register a chocobo, answer yes and choose the one you want to race, then choose if you want a short or a long race, choose one of them and you are ready to race your chocobo. In order to move your chocobo of rank, you have to win in first place 3 races either long or a short.
 
 

7. Breeding a green chocobo

    Mate a GREAT rank "A" male or female chocobo with a GOOD rank "A" male or females chocobo, using a "Carob Nut", and the next day you will get a green chocobo.
 

8. Breeding a blue chocobo

    Do the same as the green. If you got a green one mating a male GREAT chocobo with a female GOOD chcobo, now mate a GREAT female, with a GOOD male, also using a Carob nut.
 

9. Breeding a black chocobo

    Mate a BLUE rank "A" chocobo with a GREEN rank "A" chocobo, using a "Carob Nut".
 

10. Breeding a gold chocobo

    Mate a BLACK rank "S" chocobo, with a WONDERFUL rank "S", using a "Zeio Nut". Maybe after breeding this two, you won't get the gold chocobo, so before mating them save and if you didn't get it, reset and try again until you get it.
 
 

11. Tips
 

• If you ran out of money there are two places where you can get some: One is in the Northern Crater, and the other is in the Shinra wrecked airplane (the one is underwater).
• Buy the "Gil Plus" materia (1,000 GP), so you can doble the money you get. You can buy it at Gold Saucer's Wonder Square.
• When you win a race, take the GP, instead of the price.
• While hunting chcobos, catch three of each area, so you have more opportunity of getting the correct one.
• When you are hunting chocobos feed them with the cheapest greens.
